Words with double rubber band. Double elastic: application and knitting technology. Knitting a hollow double elastic band using knitting needles: a detailed description of the technique

Perhaps more than half of the products knitted, contains elements made with elastic. And this is not surprising - the ability of such fabric to stretch and hug the figure is valuable for many clothing models. But it should be noted that there is such large number variations of elastic bands with original designs, that many of them are used not only for this purpose, but also as the main pattern of the product. Simple elastic, Canadian, openwork, French, Polish, fan, faceted, double, English elastic with knitting needles - this is not a complete list possible options knitting of this type. We will look at one of them - double.

Double elastic band

Double elastic band It is, in fact, a canvas folded in half, which is why it is also called hollow. Double elastic is knitted with knitting needles and is most often used on the edges of products such as mittens, cuffs, skirt hems, etc. It is convenient to insert a regular elastic band, insulation, etc. into the cavity formed by double elastic fabrics. Often, instead of inserting an elastic band inside, the fabric is knitted together with an elastic thread matched to the color of the yarn.

Anyone who doesn’t really know how to knit double elastic with knitting needles as part of a product that has other patterns should remember that to do this you need to cast on twice as many loops. That is, if the main fabric of your product consists of 20 loops, then to knit an elastic band you need to cast on 40. The most important thing is to knit the first two rows correctly, then it will be easier to navigate according to the pattern.

We knit a double elastic band

  • We cast on loops - the required even number, preferably a multiple of four, and two edge loops.
  • We knit the first row. Remove the edge loop. Next, we knit the entire row to the end in a cycle according to the following pattern: one knit stitch behind the front wall, one knitted on another knitting needle without knitting with the working thread wound in front of the knitting needles. We knit the last edge loop, as usual, purl. Important! In order for your double rib stitch to work, the working thread should always be between the knit stitch and the slip stitch. Otherwise, the elastic band will not be hollow.
  • The second and all subsequent rows if not circular knitting knit exactly the same as the first one. When knitting in the round, in all even-numbered rows, the loop corresponding to the previously knitted knitted one is removed without knitting the thread behind the knitting needles, and the one that was removed in the previous row is knitted purlwise. Odd rows of circular knitting are knitted in exactly the same way as the first row.

This is how you knit a double elastic band with knitting needles, quite simply. Its knitting pattern looks like this:

Double elastic band
* *
* *
* *
* *
Double elastic band all around
* *
- -
* *
- -

"*" - front loop for the current side of the product;

“▼” - removed loop with thread wound in front of the knitting needles;

"-" - purl loop for the current side of the product;

“▲” - a slipped loop with the thread wound behind the needles.

If you correctly understood how to knit a double elastic band with knitting needles, and did not mix up anything in the process, then in the end, after removing the knitting needles from the loops, you will get a fabric in two layers.

Double elastic band in the product

Since double elastic is knitted with knitting needles before, after or in the middle of the main fabric of the product, it is necessary to discuss points regarding doubling the loops when moving to it, and, accordingly, decreasing when returning to knitting the main fabric.

Adding loops

There are several ways to add loops, we will look at three of them.

  • Method 1. We pull out a new loop through each one knitted using the so-called. broaches
  • Method 2. We make a yarn over behind each knitted loop, and in the next row we knit all the yarn overs with facial loops.
  • Method 3. We knit each loop with facial loops twice - first behind the back wall, and then, without removing it from the left loop, behind the front.

Reducing loops

Having knitted a hollow elastic band of the required length, you need to correctly transition to the main knitting fabric, halving the number of loops on the knitting needles. To do this, knit one row with facial loops, knitting two loops together at a time. If the elastic band completes the product, then the loops knitted in this way are closed.

If the double elastic band you are knitting with knitting needles is in the middle of the product, then when you move to it, the loops increase, and when you return to knitting the main fabric, they correspondingly decrease. After which the fabric is knitted again according to the pattern.

If you ultimately need to get a dense elastic band, then it should be knitted with knitting needles whose size is smaller than those used to knit the main elements of the product. Depending on the required “compression”, this reduction can be 1, 2 or even 3 mm. The most accurate fabric is obtained by using knitting needles with a diameter equal to the thickness of the thread or exceeding it by a maximum of 1.5 sizes.

It may be difficult to measure the length of a product, tied with an elastic band, since this value varies depending on how much it is stretched or compressed in width. Therefore, if the instructions do not provide any recommendations in this regard, the best option is to measure the length of the product in a half-stretched state.

Products and parts knitted with an elastic band cannot be ironed or treated with steam, in which case they will become deformed and lose their relief.

Even experienced knitters do not always know how to correctly knit a pattern called “tubular elastic.” In practice, this simple and very popular knitting allows you to get smooth canvas, having the appearance of a seamless pipe.

Even the very concept of “tubular” is directly related to the word “tube” (tunnel, pipe), therefore it very succinctly and realistically characterizes the type of pattern. Its second name, more common, is "hollow rubber band" which, however, does not look like the usual “grooved” elastic band, but rather like stocking stitch.

You have probably seen such a hollow “pipe” many times; it is often used to make elements of knitted clothing - cuffs and collars for adult and children’s sweaters, trims, pocket flaps, belts and more.

Also, the principle of tubular knitting can be used in the manufacture of wide decorative laces. In addition, using tubular elastic you can reduce the number of loops when moving to knitting a cuff or any other tapering element from the main fabric.

How to knit double rib with knitting needles?

To the delight of novice needlewomen, knitting a double elastic band with knitting needles is not difficult: however, from the very beginning you need to control the number of loops on the knitting needle - it should be even, this is very important. To make the pattern look as aesthetically pleasing and neat as possible, it is recommended to cast on the stitches in the Italian way, in which they initially lie on the knitting needle as purl and knit stitches.

The standard pattern for knitting tubular elastic is simple:

  • first we knit the first row according to the “1 by 1” pattern: the first loop is knitted as a knit stitch, the next one is removed as a purl stitch (we place the working thread in front of the left knitting needle and remove the loop), the third is knitted again, and so we knit all the loops of the row, alternating two steps ;
  • Now let’s move on to the second row: the same techniques are used (knitting with a knit stitch + slipping the next loop as a purl), but this must be done in the reverse order - remove the purl loop over the knit loop of the first row, knit the knit loop over the removed loop, and so on to the end of the row.

Then we consistently adhere to the same pattern of knitting double elastic with knitting needles - we alternate rows (first-second, first-second) until our fabric reaches the required length. If we are talking about circular knitting, the pattern is slightly modified. The requirements for the number of loops remain the same; there must be an even number of them.

We knit the first row in the round in the same way as when knitting straight tubular elastic, and then distribute the second row over different knitting needles.

To do this, place the finished, fully knitted first row on two knitting needles (on one - knit stitches, on the second - removed stitches).

Of course, you can use one ball, but in this case you will have to use pairs of knitting needles alternately, otherwise you will not be able to make a through hole for inserting an elastic band. Each master chooses the most comfortable method of work for himself. One important nuance should be taken into account: when making such a pattern, the thread consumption is greater than with regular knitting, so buy balls “with a reserve”.

Otherwise, the procedure for knitting a hollow elastic band is extremely simple; you only need to try it once with your own hands to understand the principle.

Let's consider another option for knitting an “elastic band” with knitting needles, it is usually called a hollow elastic band... I have never knitted it before and I don’t know why it has such a strange name, so I’m learning with you.

Hollow elastic with knitting needles - how to knit

So let's get started...

We cast on 20 loops for the sample...

and we will remove the front ones without knitting, while the working thread will be “at work”. For more information about this technique, read the article ““

1st row - remove the edge, purl stitch, remove knit stitch without knitting, thread at work, purl, remove again...etc. to the end of the row...

2nd row - we do the same as in the first row only “according to the pattern”, again we knit only the purl loops, and remove the knit stitches, the working thread is “behind the knitting”

We alternate rows)))

It turns out that the “similarity” is simple knitting one on one

Why "similarity"? Yes, because the pattern really looks like an elastic band, but in terms of quality it’s nothing like it...

The knitting is dense, pressed, double-sided...

And I decided to dissolve it...

And... 💡 Oh, MIRACLE!...For me, this is an OPENING ❗ !!! Having thrown off the loops from the knitting needles, we see that the sample is hollow inside... This is probably why the elastic band is called - hollow elastic band with knitting needles))) 😯

... and if you don’t dissolve it, you’ll end up with such a pattern... sort of double...

... and there is a hollow space inside)))

This amazing property You should definitely use this pattern)))

For example, knit a hat... So what? You will immediately get an insulated double product. In my opinion not bad idea...or potholder with knitting needles...

Good day, dear friends!

My article today will be devoted to a very interesting knitting technique, which is called “double elastic.” It is called an elastic band because of its “compressive” properties, and a double one because it looks absolutely the same on both sides. Both from the face and from the back the knitting looks like (photo 1).

This pattern is also called “hollow elastic.” Why? Look at photo 2: if you remove the fabric knitted with this pattern from the knitting needle, what comes out is “hocus pocus” - the inside between the halves is empty! That is, it turns out that we are knitting, as it were, a bag at one time. Imagine how great it would be to knit, for example, a hat with such an elastic band! It will immediately turn out to be two-layer and unusually warm.

Let's take a closer look at knitting double elastic with knitting needles.

  • Pattern Description:

We MUST cast on an even number of loops.

1st row: knit the first loop behind the front wall, remove the next loop unknitted, leaving the thread in front of the work - alternate until the end of the row (we knit the edge loops as usual);

2nd row: knit the loop removed in the previous row behind the front wall, remove the next loop unknitted - the thread is in front of the work (photo 3).

  • Where is double elastic used? Sometimes it is used to strengthen the bottom edge of the product - it turns out to be especially dense and does not stretch. It is very often used to decorate the neckline: as an element, or completely - to tie it to a stand-up collar. For example, to knit a collar I used a double elastic band , and as an element of neck design - in .

I already mentioned above that you can knit a hat with this pattern. It is also very suitable for knitting a belt, which will immediately turn out to be double, dense and will have little stretch. You can use a double elastic band to tie the straps under the fastener. Well, if you suddenly want to create, for example, a warm two-layer jacket, then you can take a swing at that. But it will take a VERY long time to knit (I had experience), because in fact you are knitting 2 layers at once!

  • Knitting double elastic in the round.

When designing a neckline, you often have to knit a double elastic band in the round (by the way, you can also knit a hat). Let's figure out how to do this on circular knitting needles. Of course, you know that when knitting in the round, all rows are knitted on the same side of the work. Therefore, in this case we knit a double elastic band like this:

1st row: 1 front loop, remove 1 loop unknitted (thread in front of work);

2nd row: remove the front loop (thread behind the work), knit the removed loop purlwise behind the back wall;

We alternate the 1st and 2nd rows.

  • How to close the loops of a double elastic band , depends on what exactly you are using it for. If you are knitting a sweater collar with this knitting stitch, then so that you can easily put it on over your head, close the loops, knitting the knit stitch with a knit stitch, and the removed loop with a purl loop. The knitting edge is elastic.

If you are knitting with a double elastic band, for example, a fastener bar or a belt, then you need to close the loops like this:

  1. remove the edge loop, then remove the first loop unknitted;
  2. We knit the next loop (which is behind the work) purlwise and pull it through the removed one;
  3. Pull the formed loop through the edge loop again;
  4. we continue to do this further - it turns out that we first knit 2 loops together, and then pull the formed loop through the previous loop lying on right knitting needle. With this method of closing the loops, the edge of the double elastic band is more rigid and does not stretch.

The methods of closing loops described above are the same for both straight and circular knitting double elastic bands.

  • How to calculate the required number of loops for knitting with a double elastic band?

As usual, you need to knit a sample and measure how many loops you cast so that they fit, for example, 5 cm of the sample. Then divide the desired width of the product in centimeters by 5 and multiply by the number of loops you calculated (for more details about calculating loops, see the article about

Knitting a double hollow elastic band with knitting needles

Hollow double elastic band - a technique for knitting an elastic band that every self-respecting needlewoman, even a beginner, should have. Therefore, today we will talk about such a common technique as knitting a double hollow elastic band with knitting needles.

The peculiarity of this technique is that to complete it you need to cast on the number of loops, doubled, since the work will be done from two layers of fabrics knitted using the stockinette stitch technique. Only these canvases are connected to each other by a typesetting edge. The knit stitches are on the outside and the purl stitches are on the inside. The canvases are adjacent to each other as if back to back.

Also, a feature of this technique is that knitting needles need to be chosen with a number less than for knitting plain stockinette stitch.

A characteristic advantage of this technique is that you can save a lot of time. Why? This is because when describing many models where a double elastic band is used, it is described differently, as a simple front fabric folded in half. If you knit knit double fabric, then it will take more time and effort. That’s why our “double hollow elastic” technique solves this problem instantly.

Pattern characteristics:

  • Despite the fact that the technique is made of two canvases, it does not look too voluminous or cumbersome.
  • A cast-on edge made using this technique has good elasticity.
  • Products knitted with double elastic have good elasticity and at the same time do not deform.
  • Due to the fact that the double hollow elastic band is knitted from two fabrics, it looks moderately voluminous and fluffy.
  • The disadvantage of this technique is that the product will require a larger amount of yarn than, for example, a regular elastic band.

What to knit with this technique:

  • This type of elastic should be applied to the edges of skirts, panties, necklines, stockings, socks, and so on. All edges can be made with double hollow elastic.
  • Often, double hollow elastic is used to knit double warm hats. Double hats start with double hollow ribbed knits and then move to double ply blanket knits on multiple knitting needles.

Conclusion: this double hollow elastic technique can be used to make edges in any knitted items. It is most advantageous to use it for knitting elastic for panties and skirts, since you can insert a regular elastic band into it for elasticity.

Double elastic knitting pattern with description

Method one:

For the sample, on knitting needles number two and a half, cast on forty stitches in a simple way.

First row: We knit using the usual and long-familiar method of a regular simple elastic band one to one - one simple front and one regular purl loop. Do not forget that we remove the first edge loop in the sample, and we knit the last loop in the row with a purl simple loop.

Second row: We remove the first loop, knit the next loop with a regular knit stitch, then move the loop from the left knitting needle to the right one and skip the working thread before work. We knit a simple knit stitch again and again move the loop from the left loop to the right loop, pulling the working thread in front of the loop. We knit this way until the end of the row, and knit the last loop with a knit stitch.

We knit the third and subsequent rows similarly to the second.

The second method of knitting a double hollow elastic band:

For a ten-centimeter long sample, use number two and a half needles to cast on forty stitches using the Italian method.

Any knitting begins with a very simple technique, such as a set of loops with knitting needles. There are a huge variety of loop set variations. In accordance with the type and purpose of the main knitting, the most suitable option for a set of loops is chosen: the edge should be elastic or, on the contrary, it should be dense and hold its shape well. Now we will tell you about such an element as a hollow elastic band with knitting needles.

Knitting a hollow double elastic band using knitting needles: a detailed description of the technique

There is a beautiful and original way to create an unusual hollow elastic band using knitting needles. With this manufacturing method, the knitted item will have a hollow and very elastic elastic band. The double hollow elastic band is quite simple in its execution, so even a novice needlewoman can master this technique.

A characteristic feature and highlight of the technique of forming a hollow double elastic band is the process of casting and forming subsequent poisonous knitting loops. The craftswoman is required to cast on the working knitting needles the number of stitches doubled. This number of stitches will be made using stockinette knitting and will make up two layers of the fabric of your product. These two layers of your work piece will be right sides together. The appearance of such a hollow double elastic band is very neat and pleasant.

Characteristic features and advantages of double hollow elastic in products:

  1. Despite the fact that the working canvas is made of two connected layers, it does not look too voluminous.
  2. Products knitted using a double hollow elastic band have good elasticity, but at the same time are not subject to excessive deformation.
  3. The disadvantage of using a hollow double elastic is that it will require more yarn to shape your project than, for example, to make ordinary elastic band.

Using this unusual and beautiful option for forming the elastic band of your product, you can tie the edges of pants, skirts, stockings, necks of products, socks and other products.

Hollow double elastic band with knitting needles: detailed description and recommendations for knitting an element of the product

We bring to your attention several ways of knitting a hollow elastic band using knitting needles.

Using the first simple method of forming a hollow double elastic, you need to prepare knitting needles number 2.5 and thread for knitting a sample. Using knitting needles, form forty loops.

Now start knitting the first row of your fabric sample. Form it using a simple technique for making loops on knitting needles. Cast on one stitch using the knit method, then form a loop using the purl method. Also, do not forget to remove the edge loop without knitting. According to the described manipulations, you need to form the entire first row of the working canvas. Then the last stitch in your row should be purled.

Next, proceed to working manipulations on the second row of your canvas. The first edge stitch must be removed onto the knitting needle without knitting. The next loop should be formed using the facial method. After this, place a loop on the right working needle and throw the thread from your skein forward of the working fabric. Now form a loop again using the knit stitch method and transfer it to the right working needle. Just as in the manipulations above, place the working thread in front of the fabric of the product. Using the described steps, form the entire row of your panel. Knit the last stitch on the left knitting needle.

The third and subsequent rows of your working canvas must be formed by analogy with the second row.

There is another quick way to form a hollow elastic band using knitting needles. Cast on forty stitches using size 2.5 needles using the Italian method. Thanks to this type of set of loops, you can immediately begin the process of creating a hollow double elastic band for your product.

Slip off the first stitch of your row without knitting. The second loop must be formed using the facial method, and then placed on the right knitting needle. Again you need to place the thread in front of the work and continue knitting. Repeat all the manipulations we described above until the entire row is completed. Form the last loop on the left needle using the knit stitch method. Your hollow double elastic band is ready.

You can choose for yourself the most suitable method of forming the elastic hollow band of your product and master it.

A selection of thematic videos for the article

We present to your attention small selection video on the process of knitting hollow elastic on knitting needles.

Double elastic is used to hold the shape of the cuffs and the edge of the hat so that the product does not stretch. It requires the use of more threads and can be done in the round. Double elastic is popular, but not every needlewoman knows how to knit this pattern.

Where to use double elastic band?

Double elastic, like its other varieties, “compresses” the fabric, thereby ensuring firmness and elasticity. It is used for knitting sleeves and necklines, the edges of hats, skirts, socks and other elements of products made using knitting needles. A hollow elastic band is often inserted a simple elastic band if you want to improve elasticity.

Hollow double elastic band

The peculiarity of knitting a double hollow elastic band using knitting needles is that it requires casting on twice as many loops, because it includes two fabrics. The facial stitch technique is used. In addition, the product can be knitted in the round.

The canvases are linked to each other with a typesetting edge. Thus, knitting a hollow double rib using knitting needles involves knitting on the outside and purling on the inside.

Another feature of double rib knitting is the need to use needles with a number smaller than for creating an ordinary stockinette stitch.

Thus, the main advantages of knitting double elastic using knitting needles are the following:

  • the product is not visually voluminous, although it includes two canvases;
  • good elasticity;
  • is not subject to deformation.

The disadvantage of a double elastic band is that it requires more yarn than to create an ordinary elastic band using knitting needles.

Knitting a double elastic band with knitting needles - diagram with description

There are two ways to knit a hollow elastic band from two fabrics with knitting needles.

First way

To knit the fabric as a sample, you need to cast on 20 loops with an auxiliary thread on knitting needles number 2.5. After this, knitting is performed according to the pattern:

When the hollow double elastic band is knitted, you can remove the auxiliary thread. To do this, you need to carefully cut the stitch of the cast-on row and remove the thread using a needle or knitting needle.

Second way

To start knitting a double rib, you need to cast on 40 stitches on your knitting needles:

For the remaining rows, knitting is done in the same way until the required height of the product is obtained. The last row is knitted exclusively with knit stitches, otherwise the edge will turn out unattractive and it will look like the elastic is stretched. During the work process, do not forget about the edge loops. The first one needs to be removed, and the last one is always knitted purlwise.

To close the loops, you can use any convenient method. Which one to choose, each needlewoman decides independently. You can do this with crochet or with knitting needles - it doesn’t matter.

In a hollow elastic band, both sides of the fabric are almost indistinguishable. If you divide the stitches by placing them on two different needles, you can see layers of regular stockinette stitch that are connected by the edges and the first row. After completing the double rib, in order to continue knitting the product in the usual way, you will have to knit 2 loops in the last row.

If knitting is done in the round, the work occurs on only one side. In this case, it is necessary to mark the transition of the front and back rows.

Double elastic is also called hollow. This elastic band is used for knitting the edges of products: hats, mittens, cuffs, panties, skirts, etc. This elastic band is a canvas folded in half. But in order not to knit a long fabric and stitch it manually to create a cavity, they use the double elastic knitting technique. It is convenient to insert a regular underwear elastic into such a cavity to tighten the knitting. Also, instead of inserting an elastic band, you can knit together with an elastic thread chosen to match the color of the yarn.

Before starting work, experiment, because... It may not work right away. We must not forget that to knit such an elastic band, twice as many loops are cast on the knitting needles. That is, if you need 20 loops for the main fabric of the product, then for the elastic you cast on 40. After that, you will see that the fabric itself will be made of 20 loops. It is desirable that the number of loops being cast on is even.

It is necessary to knit the first and second row correctly, so the fabric will be easier to knit.

So, we cast on 40 initial loops. We knit the first row like this: we remove the edge loop, 1 knit stitch, remove the next loop on another knitting needle, like a purl, and the working thread in front, then again 1 knit stitch, remove 1 loop.
So we continue to knit until the end of the row.
Important point: The working thread should always be between the knit stitch and the slip stitch. Otherwise, a hollow elastic band will not work. We knit the second row like this: we remove the edge loop, we remove the front loop of the previous row onto a knitting needle (working thread in front), we knit the removed loop of the previous row with a front loop. By knitting 11-12 rows, you will get a hollow elastic band.

If the hollow elastic band on the product is knitted after the main fabric of the product, then for this it is necessary to double the number of loops. There are two ways to add loops.
First: pull a new loop through one knitted loop.
Second way: After each knitted loop, yarn over. In the next row, the yarn over is knitted with a knit stitch.

This way the elastic is knitted to the width you need. Then, when moving to the main fabric, knit one row with knit stitches, while knitting two knit stitches together. If the elastic is at the end of the product and after knitting the main fabric, then the loops knitted together are closed.

If the elastic is on the belt, then when moving to knitting the elastic, the loops increase, and when moving to knitting the main fabric, they decrease. Next, the fabric is knitted again according to the pattern.

This is what a hollow elastic band looks like if you remove the knitting needles when knitting:

On appearance the fabric, which is knitted with a double elastic band, resembles a pipe. Therefore, this type of elastic is often called tubular or hollow. This name comes from the similarity of the canvas to a tube.

Double rib resembles a single piece of fabric, which is often used for knitting cuffs. But the appearance of the loops is more reminiscent of a stocking stitch pattern than a simple elastic band. Double elastic is often used for knitting shoulder straps and straps. It is difficult to find a more suitable pattern if you need to knit a pocket flap or a belt.

Experienced knitters often have in their arsenal so-called “dolls” for tying cords. Beginners may not have such a device, so in this case a double elastic band will be necessary.

Double or hollow elastic can sometimes be used to reduce loops when moving from one part of the fabric to another. It is often used when transitioning from the main fabric to the sleeve, for example, in the process of knitting a sweater or pullover.

Also, one cannot help but recall the double elastic band in the process of knitting the fabric, which was cast on using the Italian method. Yarn over using the Italian method is often used when knitting necklines and cuffs, especially those that should not stretch or deform too much.

Main features of double rib knitting

To make it clearer for beginners, you need to immediately clarify that a hollow elastic band is a fabric that is knitted with stockinette stitch and connected with a cast-on edge. The wrong side is directed inside the fabric.

If you don’t know how many stitches are required, then it’s better to spend time and knit a control sample based on the front stitch. When you get the exact number of loops, you need to multiply them by two, since the fabric will be double. For example, if a 10 cm long stockinette fabric consists of 16 loops, then a fabric of the same length, but with double elastic, will consist of 32 loops (16*2).

To ensure that the fabric knitted with a double elastic band does not stretch during wear, it must be knitted with knitting needles 1 size smaller than for stockinette stitch.

It is worth remembering that when casting on loops for a double elastic band, you must always ensure that the number of cast-on loops is a multiple of four, and it must also be even. In addition, two edge loops must be added to the counted quantity.

A double elastic band can consist of both front and back loops, so you need to monitor the symmetry of the fabric and its edge. To prevent the fabric from “walking,” each row must be completed with a purl loop. The first stitch of the next row should be left and removed without knitting. In simple words To knit one row of double elastic, two approaches are required. The first is knitting the front wall of the loops, and the second is the back. All that remains is to choose the method of closing the loops, because the method of closing the loops also depends on the different purposes of the fabric.

For those who find it more convenient to look at diagrams, this one can be considered the most classic:

Learning to knit a classic hollow rib 1x1

The most basic row, which will set the pattern for the entire canvas, can be called the first. To knit 1 row you need to knit: 1 knit stitch, remove 1 loop according to the principle of a purl loop so that the thread is in front of the left knitting needle, 1 knit loop, alternating until the end of the cast-on row.

The second row will be knitted similarly to the first, but at the same time, above the front loop, which is located in the 1st row, you need to remove the loop, and at the place where the front loop was knitted, there will be a removal in the second. Repeat alternating rows until the desired length is reached.

To make it clearer, you can repeat knitting and removing loops according to the photo.

The photo shows the basic principle of knitting double elastic. One loop is knitted as a knit stitch, the next one is removed. In this case, the yarn should be in front of the removed loop, the broach should remain inside the fabric. Repeat until the end of the row until you run out of stitches.

To make the fabric more even, it is advisable to use an Italian set of loops. In practice it should look like this. The Italian method of yarn over involves the use of an auxiliary thread. With this method of casting on rows 1 and 2, it is better to knit rows with thin knitting needles. After knitting a couple of rows, the auxiliary thread can be removed.

How to knit double elastic in the round?

First method

The principle of knitting such an elastic band will be a little complicated, since in this option you need to carefully monitor the type of row. The first row of this knitting should be alternated between a knit stitch and a purl stitch. Second row: knit 1, slip 2 (thread should be in front of the left needle), knit 1, slip 1 (thread should be in front of the left needle). Repeat alternating from the first row to the end.

Second method

It is designed to alternate even and odd rows. Therefore, the first row is knitted like this:

one front loop, slip one (thread should be in front of the front wall of the loop), alternating until the end of the row.

The second row is a little more difficult to knit. The loop that was removed should be knitted purlwise, the next loop should be removed (the thread should be behind the back wall of the loop), alternating until the end of the row.

In order not to confuse the type of row, even rows can be marked with a different thread.

Third method

In this method, it is necessary to strictly count the number of loops cast on; it must be even. The 1st row must be knitted according to the principle of 1x1 elastic bands - one front loop and one removed according to the principle of a purl loop. Those loops that were knitted need to be distributed onto one knitting needle. Throw the loops that were removed onto the second knitting needle, and the thread should be in front of the front wall of the loop. Next, it remains to knit the outer side of the double elastic band in a circle. For these loops, take one ball of thread. For knitting inside you need to take a second ball of fabric, and knitting should take place in rotating rows.

If you do not want to divide the yarn into two balls, then you can knit different sides alternately, but you may not get holes. Sometimes knitted tubes of double elastic are used for drawstrings on children's items, for example, trousers, rompers, and overalls.

How to make the transition from a basic canvas to a double elastic band?

Very often the double elastic band is located in the middle or at the end of the main fabric. This could be a belt on a dress or skirt, the neck of a top or sweater. In order for the product to have a neat appearance, its remaining loops are sometimes knitted with a double elastic band. In the presented photo you can see how the loops at the neck of the top are closed with an elastic band.

In the process of transitioning from a simple fabric to a double elastic band, from each loop of the main fabric you need to knit 1 front and 1 purl loop. To make the work neat, the knitting needles should be 1-2 sizes smaller than those used to knit the main fabric.

It happens that the tube elastic does not finish the canvas, but is only its intermediate element. After the hollow elastic band, the main fabric continues. For this process, you again need to change the knitting needles to thicker ones. The number of loops again needs to be reduced by 2 times. To do this, two double elastic loops need to be knitted as one. One of these loops will be from the front wall of the elastic, and the second will be from the back.

The final closure of the double elastic band is easiest done with a regular needle. The process resembles the horizontal connection of two canvases. In practice, this turns out to be quite simple, just connect the front and back walls of each loop.

When the back wall is stitched, the edge of the fabric becomes very elastic. This must be taken into account when knitting cuffs and necklines. To ensure that the edge of the fabric knitted with a double elastic band is as tight as possible, the loops on both sides must be sewn simultaneously, in one go.

Subtleties of Italian stitch knitting

It is worth immediately noting that Italian knitting of loops can be designed both for a tight edge of the fabric and for an elastic one. The operating principle is slightly different, so beginners will have to be patient. The tight edge is often used for cuffs and sleeves, while the elastic edge most often decorates the neck of sweaters, various edgings on hats, etc.

To make it easier for beginners to learn the differences different types edges, you can take note simple circuits design of such a canvas. It’s easier and clearer to first master turning rows, and then you can start knitting in the round.

The principle of knitting a turn row with an elastic edge

To get a loose edge of the fabric, you need to remember the following alternation of rows.

The first row involves knitting all the knit stitches behind the back wall of the loop, while the purl stitches must be removed and left unknitted. The entire first row of thread should be placed in front of the fabric.

The second row differs from the first in that all the front stitches are knitted behind the front wall. Purl ones also need to be removed unknitted. The thread also remains in front of the canvas. Repeat alternation.

The principle of knitting a turning row with a hard edge

The method of this knitting is designed so that only in row 1 the knit stitches should be knitted through the back side of the loop, in all other rows the knit stitches should be knitted through the front. In practice it should look like this:

first row - we knit all the front loops behind the back wall, simply remove the purl loops and leave them unknitted;

the second and subsequent rows in the fabric - we knit all the front loops behind the front wall, simply remove the purl loops and leave them unknitted. The thread should be in front of the fabric in each row.

The principle of knitting an elastic edge in circular knitting

This method also implies that in the first and second rows, keep the thread in front of the fabric. First row - knit all the front stitches through the back wall of the loops, simply remove all the purl loops and leave them unknitted.

Second row - you need to knit all the purl loops, just remove the knit stitches and leave them unknitted. Alternate to the desired canvas height.

The principle of knitting a hard edge for circular knitting needles

This method can be called one of the most difficult, so for beginners it is better to write down the diagram and sequence on a separate piece of paper so as not to confuse the rows.
The first row is to knit the front loops along the back wall, simply remove the purl loops without knitting. In this case, the thread should be in front of the canvas.

Second row - we knit all the purl loops, remove the knit stitches and do not knit them, keep the thread at work.

Third row - knit the front loops behind the front wall, remove the purl loops and do not knit them, keep the thread in front of the fabric.

Fourth row - we knit all the purl loops, remove the knit stitches and do not knit them, keep the thread at work.
