In the fall of 1893, border guards became an independent unit. The tasks that the military solved at that time:
- exposing smuggling and illegal transportation of goods;
- illegal border crossing.

The history of the holiday begins in 1918. On May 28, the Border Guard was established. Since 1958, this day has become an official holiday - Border Guard Day. Modern Belarus has preserved the date of the holiday in memory of the heroism of the border guards.
The feat of the border guards who took part in the battle back in 1941 will forever be remembered. The first to receive him were the night patrols guarding the border, which was about one thousand kilometers long. Border areas have turned into front-line areas. The Germans, already in the first minutes of the war, used artillery, tanks and aircraft to break the resistance. Although superiority was on the enemy's side, the personnel of all outposts retreated only by order.
A separate page in the history of the border troops is the defense of the Brest Fortress. It was attacked by the Austrians (not the Germans, as many people think) at 4 hours 23 minutes (Moscow time) 1941. This was preceded by a powerful shelling, as a result of which communications were interrupted, warehouses and water supply were destroyed, and the garrison personnel suffered heavy losses. Scattered units of the fortress defenders fought for a whole month. The phrase of an unknown hero, scratched on the wall and dated July 20, 1941, became world famous: “I am dying, but I am not giving up.” The fortress fell, but became a symbol of courage. The feat of the defenders served as an example to Soviet soldiers and inspired new exploits.

Today this holiday is celebrated by everyone who, in one way or another, is associated with the border troops: current and former border guards, their relatives, and service personnel. Mandatory official events- laying flowers and wreaths at monuments and obelisks of fallen border guards, presenting certificates and awards to those who distinguished themselves, often conferring military ranks on May 28th.
Swimming in fountains and singing with a guitar are common among former border guards. Active duty personnel do not have days off, so they often celebrate the holiday while on duty.
The meaning of the holiday is to emphasize the importance of border troops for the security of the country, to preserve the memory of those who died and those who honestly performed their duty.
As part of the celebrations, which began on Sunday morning, border agency officers and veteran border guards laid wreaths at the Victory Obelisk in the capital. Then a solemn procession took place to the Island of Courage and Sorrow, where the border guards paid tribute to the memory of the fallen internationalist soldiers.
On this day holiday events take place in all regional and district cities of Belarus in which military units of the border service are stationed. Traditionally, veterans-border guards, cadets, cadets, active military personnel and members of their families take part in them.
